What is the macula?

Located near the center of the retina is the macula which is responsible for clear vision in your direct line of sight. It contains a yellow pigment called the macular pigment—mainly made up of lutein and zeaxanthin that helps protect the eye’s sensitive photoreceptors by neutralizing the free radicals produced by oxidative damage. When light enters the eyes, it can induce oxidative damage on the retina and macula which may impair vision. However, our eyes cannot naturally produce lutein and zeaxanthin and over time, when these antioxidants get expended without being replenished, it can lead to decreased amounts of these compounds in the macula.
